NLLAP 45 took place on Tuesday, 26th August, 2014 at the Coconut Grove Hotel in Accra on the theme, “The Sanitation Crisis in Accra – The Evidence and Investment Options in Low Income Urban Communities (The SaniPath Rapid Assessment Tool)”. This platform hosted the SaniPath project team of experts from the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Water Research Institute of CSIR, International Water Management Institute, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Hygiene, the Center for Global Safe Water at Emory University and TREND. They shared evidence gathered through a 3 year multi-disciplinary study on sanitation conducted in Accra. The discussion explored sanitation conditions and behaviors prevalent in four communities (Alajo, Bukom, Old Fadama (Agbogbloshie) and Shiabu) and investment options to address the poor sanitation conditions to avoid the perennial cholera outbreak in Accra. The SaniPath Rapid Assessment Tool designed from the 3 year study was also launched and formally presented to the government through the Environmental Health and Sanitation Directorate of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (EHSD-MLGRD).
